Using Experience for Assessing Grasp Reliability

چکیده
Autonomous manipulation is a key issue for a humanoid robot. Here, we are interested in a vision-based grasping behavior so that the robot can deal with previously unknown objects in real time and in an intelligent manner. Starting from a number of feasible candidate grasps, we focus on the problem of predicting their reliability using the knowledge acquired in previous grasping experiences. A set of visual features which take into account physical properties that can affect the stability and reliability of a grasp are defined. A humanoid robot obtains its grasping experience by repeating a large number of grasping actions on different objects. An experimental protocol is established in order to classify grasps according to their reliability. A prediction/classification strategy is defined which allows the robot to predict the outcome of a grasp only analyzing its visual features. The results indicate that the defined features do characterize grasp quality and that the classification method is adequate to predict the reliability of a grasp.

A New Analysis Concept in Applying Software Reliability Growth Models and Tool Implementation: The SafeMan
In recent years, many software development organizations have been assessing and analyzing their software product’s reliability/quality and judging whether the software product is releasable by using Software Reliability Growth Models (SRGMs) at the final stage of software development. The usage of SRGMs originates in the advantage that various reliability analysis results based on the SRGMs ca...
متن کاملVision based planar grasp synthesis and reliability assessment for a multifinger robot hand: a learning approach
This work presents a novel practical approach to the grasp synthesis problem that combines the use of visual information with the application of learning techniques. A vision-based grasping system has been implemented on a humanoid robot. It is able to compute a set of feasible grasps and to execute any of them. This basic system is enhanced and completed by the development of a learning framew...
متن کاملHow can I , robot , pick up that object with my hand ?
This paper describes a practical approach to the robot grasping problem. An approach that is composed of two different parts. First, a vision-based grasp synthesis system implemented on a humanoid robot able to compute a set of feasible grasps and to execute any of them. This grasping system takes into account gripper kinematics constraints and uses little computational effort. Second, a learni...
متن کاملAmbiguity as Grasp: The Reworking of Sense
Ambiguity may lead us to insert abstractions into our experience that create a greater number of unanticipated, unintended consequences. When people move closer to the flux of ambiguity, they work to make sense of it. High reliability organizations react to ambiguity by increasing it momentarily. To increase ambiguity is to grasp more of the situation, to refrain from simplifications, and to st...
متن کاملAutonomously Acquiring Instance-Based Object Models from Experience
A key aim of current research is to create robots that can reliably manipulate objects. However, in many applications, general-purpose object detection or manipulation is not required: the robot would be useful if it could recognize, localize, and manipulate the relatively small set of specific objects most important in that application, but do so with very high reliability. Instance-based appr...
